Moses Lake officials met with Washington Department of Ecology Director Casey Sixkiller on Tuesday to discuss water use as part of a statewide initiative. The meeting, held in Moses Lake, was the second in a series across Washington to outline a plan for current and future water availability.
State officials emphasized the need for collaboration, with Sixkiller stating, "Finding ourselves in another year of drought really necessitates a new conversation about our water future." The meeting included city officials from Moses Lake, Quincy, and Othello, with Moses Lake Mayor Dustin Swartz calling it "a fruitful endeavor."
Sixkiller cited research showing long-term trends of more rain and less snow, which affects water availability in summer. Options discussed included additional reservoir storage, water conservation, and reuse. State officials aim to support local projects rather than hinder them, with Sixkiller noting, "We want to help make those work, rather than slow them down."
